This Honu (Sea Turtle) Petroglyph Pendant is made of Fine Silver (.999), and is handcrafted on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It has a lovely patina finish. Measures approximately 1-1/4" x 1-1/4".
The Honu, otherwise known as the sea turtle, is found throughout the Hawaiian Islands, all the way to Midway. 90% of the Hawaiian population breed and nest at French Frigate Shoals, from April to November. There are various threats to the species' survival: boat propellers, fishermen's nets, habitat loss from human development of their nesting areas, and hunting by humans for their flesh. A disease called fibropapillomatosis is also a problem in some green sea turtle populations. The Hawaii and Southern California green sea turtles are designated threatened, and the Florida and Mexico populations are endangered.
